School Calendar / Annual Events
Annual events
Throughout the year a whole range of celebrations, shows and events take place. Each one is eagerly anticipated and fun and are for all the community to share in.
Our main events are as follows:
Hallowe'en
At the end of October we celebrate the Anglo-American festival of Hallowe’en by having a fun-filled party day in the Infant school, where children come to school dressed in spooky costumes, play games and do Hallowe’en crafts. In the evening the school is transformed for our disco party evening, with fancy dress competitions, food and drink, culminating in a spectacular firework display. Also around this time we remember Divali, the festival of light, which is celebrated by our Indian children. In the Infants, children make Divali lanterns and listen to the Divali story.
CHRISTMAS
Christmas is celebrated in many ways throughout the school, with each department having a party day to which Santa Claus usually makes a most welcome appearance! The whole school community joins together in two exciting events, the first is for an evening of carol singing in Triana to raise money for the child we have sponsored in Peru. The second is the final event of the first term, the Infant Nativity Play, in which all the Infants dress up and perform a play about Christmas - watched by a theatre full of expectant Mums, Dads, Grandparents and friends.
Carnival
Every spring we celebrate Carnival in school with party days where the children and teachers come to school in fancy dress! Parents are welcome to the Infant party afternoon to enjoy the celebrations and laugh at the annual clown show!
The older classes have differing focuses to their celebrations with sports and general knowledge competitions pitching the houses against each other.
Día de Canarias
At the end of May we join with the rest of the Canarian community in celebrating Día de Canarias. Leading up to the day, time is spent in class learning about the culture, history and traditions of the Canary Islands. The day is celebrated by children wearing Canarian costume and enjoying playing typical Canarian games and sports such as lucha canaria, salto de palo and learning Canarian dancing. Parents and friends are invited to join with the school community in a special commemorative assembly and fiesta, and to enjoy traditional Canarian food.
Community service
Students are also encouraged to look beyond themselves and the school to the local community and the wider world. Fundraising for a range of local, national and international charities takes place each year and provides an outlet for students to learn to use their gifts and skills to help others. Money is raised annually through singing Christmas carols in Triana to support a child in Peru, non-uniform days have been held to raise money for victims of disasters, and sponsored events, such as a sponsored walk for the Asian Tsunami, take place to raise money for charity.
Assemblies
Students share their learning with the school community and parents in our weekly assemblies. These are also a perfect opportunity to develop confidence and drama and public speaking skills. Each department has a weekly assembly, in which each class takes a turn to lead once per term. Assemblies are also a time for raising self-esteem as children are positively commended each week through the presentation of Merit Awards and English Speaking Awards. Children are all in one of the four "houses" and during assembly they eagerly hear if their hard work means that their "house" has the top points total for that week!
Primary/Secondary bi-annual play
Every two years either the Primary or the Secondary department produce a musical play, which is performed in a local theatre. Past productions have been very ambitious and successful and have included “Oliver”, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Blue Crystal”.
Acting, dancing or singing on stage in front of an audience is a tremendous experience for children. It gives an opportunity for children to shine in an area outside the classroom, to work on clear diction, memorising text and to become naturally confident about speaking in public.
Graduation
At the end of each academic year, we have a graduation ceremony for children who are moving onto another department. Children completing the Infant stage, Primary stage and Secondary stage each have a special assembly in which their achievements are recognised and diplomas are given out. Parents and friends are welcome to these events.
