Quote of the day
Year 3 Green
Welcome
Welcome to Year 3!
Finally, what are we going to do in the last term?
Along with the rest of Key Stage 2 we will be continuing to teach our creative curriculum, which ensures that teaching and learning develops through all the subject areas. This term our focus will be the Olympics and once again this will form the basis for our history, geography, art, design technology and PSCHE learning as well as some of our literacy. As always, whilst continuing to promote the development of your children’s spoken, written and reading of English at all times!
As promised at the parents meetings, here are some internet sites we recommend to support the children’s class based learning at home, with some extra ones added for the new term.
‘Hamilton at home’ supports the topic and maths work that we do via the age 7-11 section, literacy links will be found in the 5-7 age section. http://www.hamiltonathome.org.uk/
We thoroughly recommend the BBC’s bitesize programmes; there is a wide range of interactive activities for all areas of English, maths and science, the KS1 area may also be useful for some aspects of English. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ks2bitesize/.
Curriculum
Literacy
We will be continuing this term with our VCOP’s and ‘Big Writing’ work, since I last updated the webpage we have written a diary for a day in the life of a pet and a fantasy story. Alongside this we will study some more different types of writing, the forthcoming genres are listed in the table. We will also continue to study key elements of learning English as an additional language and focus will be placed on common mistakes children make with English. My own Spanish lessons are helping me to realise the grammatical differences between English and Spanish and this in turn helps me to help the children.
Spellings
In term three the children will be continuing to work upon what are called ‘middle blend’ sounds which in English, although sound the same, can often be spelt in many different ways – which makes it all very tricky! So each week they will receive words that although rhyme, follow a variety of spelling patterns. They will also receive a small number of words that do not follow the same pattern and these are being learnt because they are ‘high frequency’ words; words which are used very frequently. Both sets of words should be learnt over the course of the week, by both writing out singularly as well as being used in context within a sentence.
Maths
In year three great emphasis is being placed on children’s rapid recall of key number facts, children should by now have learnt their x2, x5 and x10 tables followed by their x3 and x4 times tables. Some of the children have already moved on to 6x and 8x tables, but we must reiterate that if earlier ones are not yet thoroughly known, you should not be moving on. It would also be of benefit if children can turn known multiplication facts around and also learn their division equivalents. The children should also have a firm knowledge of number bonds, or pairs, to 10, 20 and 100 for example 3+7=10, 13+7= 20, 30+70=100, even 300+700=1000 and be starting to think about 35+65=100 etc. We have also now covered the halving and doubling facts for all numbers up to 20, it would be great if the children could continue to practise these also, especially if they are still a bit unsure. These are the types of number facts that will be included in weekly mental tests.

Homework
Alongside learning spellings and number facts for weekly tests (and to improve their overall grasp of mathematics and spelling) the children should be regularly reading, both aloud to an adult and independently. As Miss Claire has mentioned in her newsletter, can I also give a gentle reminder that a good reader can understand what they are reading as well as correctly pronounce the words. You can help your child by asking them questions about what they are reading, for example; “why do you think that happened?”, “what do you think will happen next?” or “how do you think they feel about that?” If necessary this conversation can be in Spanish, as in the end the essential point is that the children think about what they have read. They will also be given weekly homework activities to complement their maths and literacy work in class. In addition to this children will also be regularly set more creative projects, ensuring parents are both kept informed about what their child is currently learning as well as being involved in the work their child is completing.

Spanish Homework
Departamento de Español
Estimados padres,
Miss Natalia
